Ah, to go back to the days when ECW aired at 3am on the Spanish Channel. Or even just back to the days when they got a prime time slot on Fridays on TNN. That’s when, miracle of miracles, ECW was actually popular enough to justify the making of ACTION FIGURES!
My college roommate and I definitely hit up the nearest Toys R Us as soon as we heard about San Francisco Toys making these to try and find them, and while we got a handful (if memory serves, we picked up Candido, Sabu, Taz, and Justin Credible. What happened to those toys, I have no idea).
As you can see from the Bubba Dudley below, these were not exactly the highest quality toys. In fact, they all had a red lever sticking out of the back to operate whatever “special move” the box claimed they could perform. Yet there’s something pleasantly retro about them that makes me wish I still had the 4 we got back in 1999. Thankfully, ECW action figures appear to be cheap and easy to find on the ‘bay.
A big surprise in my searching however, was that the ECW toyline made it past the first line up! As you can see below, there were at least two more lines: Champion Clashers and Bash of the Brawlers! Who knew?!
Hell, with the extra lines, even a guy like Nova ended up with an action figure! NOVA!
Now if only volume 2 of Extreme Music would come out…
