Mickey Mouse Isn’t Paying The Bills Anymore

Have you noticed the recent of appearance in Disney in all sorts of new places? I know I have. It seems like Disney is attempting to branch out. After 90 years, someone realized it was time to mix it up. And this makes sense too. Traditionally, Disney’s target demographic has been children age 0 – 14 (or some where in the early teens). Courtesy of iPods, xbox and a shorter maturation time span, this target demographic window is shrinking. Instead of 0-14, Disney is lucky if they can hold onto 0-11. I’ve walked by a few Disney stores (the ones that didn’t out right shut down), and I would have to say the average age of the end consumer is getting lower and lower. I’d guess it is close to 4 lately (I think princesses are one of those Disney saviors).

This shrinking window must have forced execs to start thinking outside the box. In this post, I hope to give you a glimpse into this window. And oddly, most of these items are NOT in the usual toy range …

Lets start off with this lip gloss from MAC makeups. Yeah, not the typical item you would see branded with Disney characters. I’ve walked by enough Macy’s makeup counters and Sephoras to realize that makeup is big business. Disney execs can see this too. It seems everyone these days is getting into the health good collaborations from Kat Von Dee to Pharrell Williams. Makeup is big. And who’s bigger in a young ladies life than good old Daisy Duke. Seems like an easy transition product for tweens and teens.

Over to the mens counter, a few street brands have had success collaborating with Disney. These ones really struck me as odd. No disrespect to the brands Hundreds or Supreme, but the lifestyles portrayed by these crews seems very un-Disney. I believe The Hundreds kicked it off 2-3 years back. They did a big “Lost Boys” themed style drop. It worked, it even made sense. The Lost Boys were always the riff raff of the Pan world. I’m sure The Hundreds feels the same way.

Then Supreme (the king of collaborations) dropped these Mickey Mouse tees. You wouldn’t look at them twice if you saw someone wearing one on the street. They look like every other Mouse tee you’ve ever seen. Except these are branded with the name SUPREME. And that turns a $15 shirt into a $75 shirt. Good luck to the seller of this particular one …

Now I know what you are thinking. You didn’t come to this post to read about makeup and tshirts. Where the toys at??? Settle down, we’re getting to my favorite piece right now.

What you see here is the Kaws X Disney Pinocchio & Jiminy Cricket Set. These pieces dropped on August 28, 2010 (just a few days back, mind you) over in Japan at the Original Fake store. Kaws has been going hard with art, beer bottles … and massive sculptures lately so I was very excited to see him get back into the toy market (doesn’t it feel like the kaws dissected figures came out a million years ago already??).

This one has classic KAWS styling. X’ed up hands, slashed mouths and tons of great details. Jiminy Cricket stands about as tall as a 100% Be@rbrick, where Pinocchio is more like a 400% Be@rbrick. Again, these would look great in my living room. Hook it up!

ps. Did anyone see this ridiculous “Kaws figure lot”? Whoooofffffff. Does this kid know how ebay works?? I’m guessing not. Continue reading »

Dee, Ricky, Legos & G-Shocks

Once upon a time, there were a few classic toys that were untouchable. You know. Those toys that couldn’t be ruined. Couldn’t “jump the shark.” My short list is model trains, lincoln logs and Legos. I was all about lincoln logs as a kid. You could build all day, make a whole town, then drive your cars up and down the streets. Life was pretty sweet (and they smelled good too!!). Legos were next level. You could build more than just log cabins. You could build town houses or space ships or mobile cranes. Just the coolest stuff to set your imagination wild on. I was all over it.

Lately, I feel that it has changed. Lego is now a mall store. I see tweens having foam sword fights there frequently; not sure how that fuels imaginations … And then two dudes named Dee And Ricky began dropping “high end fashion accessories” built from Legos. In reality, it’s something any person could accomplish in 28 seconds with 14 blocks, a pin and a hot glue gun. But these two are getting $20-$40 a pop for their “creations.” And the scary thing? People are buying them. Celebrities all over the US have been spotted sporting them. It blows my mind.

And now Casio has justified these two by creating a “collaboration” g-shock watch. Granted, collaboration watches aren’t like getting knighted, but it does prove something to the world, “someone noticed.” Exactly. Someone saw what these two were doing, approved and fueled the fire. So now we have 1000 of these “watches” out there in the world. Call me a hater, but seriously, how do you even tell time with these things??

Maybe I need to stop reading “fashion” blogs as the cigarette pendants are KILLING me. Smoking stinks. Continue reading »

Evel Knievel Stunt Cycle Set

YES! I remember the countless hours of playing with this toy! I was born in 1980 but my brother who is 5 years older than me had this badass toy. We would set this up in our living room and at ther other end we would have a big 3 ring binder proped up on some books. Set this badass up and pull the crank. The cycle would zip across the room and jump right off crashing into the TV stand. Sometimes we would even setup a laundry basket titled behind it so he would make a “death defying leap” off the 3 ring binder and into the basket. We would also sometimes setup some of our toy cars and truck for him to jump over. This is probably the toy with the most vivid memories for me.

I am a LOST junkie…

Some of my favorite current figures are the LOST figures that McFarlane put out a few years back. I have all of series 1 but need to grab a few more from series 2. I am pissed that these did not sell well enough when they were released because a Series 3 was already planned and was going to have Ben Linus and Sayid among others! One other thing about this figure line… WHY did they make a Shannon figure? Really, who cares?!?! They have about 10 Shannon figures in the 50-75% off bin at toy stores nationwide. Bad idea guys, Claire or Rousseau would have been A MUCH better idea.

Series 1 in package for those that like em’ mint, i however have mine out and displayed like the ones below.

Series 1 and 2 out of box. I like the persons display but looks like he doesn’t have the “backdrops” that came with Series 1.

Size Does Matter!

They revealed some cool stuff at the SDCC last week, but this is the best one I’ve seen yet. Gentle Giant is taking the classic 3.25″ 70′s Stars Wars figures and redoing them as 12″ figures! They will still have the same limited articulation and the same simple details, but they will be huge! Each figure is packaged on a giant sized card/bubble and they look amazing!

Unfortunantly they (the first 2 at least) are limited to only 2500 pieces. The Stormtrooper was available for preorder at Comicon and the Boba Fett will be available for preorder at Star Wars Celebration 5 coming up very soon.

Word has it that they are also doing… Darth Vader, Tusken Raider, Jawa, Luke, Han, Leia, Chewbacca, Greedo, Walrusman & Hammerhead, but I seriously doubt they will stop there!

*this picture is not from the auction, but it shows the figures much better!

San Diego Comic Con 2010 Exclusive – Star Wars Cubedude

Cubedudes are where it’s at!ย  I am not a fan of Be@rbricks really and all the other mini little figures that you really don’t do anything with.ย  These Star Wars Clone Wars Cubedudes are cool!ย  They look awesome and you get to build them!ย

The Yoda kinda looks more like Mel Brooks in Spaceballs!

This Toy Stinks!

I was a BIG fan of ‘Masters of the Universe’ action figures when I was a kid. I remember getting all of the originals over the course of a few trips to the local Childworld store and then they started busting out all sorts of crazy characters and I had to start picking and choosing rather then ‘collecting them all’.

From the start of the series to the end I can clearly say that my favorite character/figure was ‘Stinkor’ – “the Evil Master of Odors”. Not only was he a cool looking muscled out heavily armed skunk, but he also smelled like a skunk!!

Here is a vintage Masters of the Universe ‘Stinkor’ figure loose, but complete. I wonder if he still stinks??

and heres a more recent Stinkor mini statue from Neca Toys. This was done at the same scale as the more recent series of Masters of the Universe action figures, but unfortunantly the line was canceled before they got a lot of the cooler characters produced so Neca picked up the ball and made these ‘mini statues’ to display with the other figures.

GO JOE!

On Christmas Day 1983 when I woke up and went to the Christmas tree I was devistated to not see the G.I. Joe ‘Headquarters’ that I had asked for. There was a big assortment of other G.I. Joe toys, but not the one I wanted the most. Once all the presents were opened we headed to my grandmothers for more presents and dinner so I HOPED that the G.I. Joe base was there…. it wasn’t and I was even more devistated. I was an only child so I got A LOT of toys for Christmas, but not the one I wanted most… that is until my God Mother came to my grandmothers house with one giant box. I pulled back that paper and there it was!! I’m sure I screamed from excitment!

I also remember being SUPER anal retentive about all the stickers being propperly placed and making sure my dad didn’t screw up any of them while he put it all together (the G.I. Joe plans were the worst for sticker placement!). Once it was all together, stickers and all we realized that the cover for the non garage lift side of the base was missing. We didnt get one in the box! After some phone calls my dad was able to get one sent to us by Hasbro and I was a VERY happy camper!

Here is a G.I. Joe Headquarters thats missing only one part and looks like its in real good shape. It even comes with a (worn) box. Awesome toy and a good price!

and heres one thats cheaper if your not as concerned with the condition. Its missing some small pieces and is discolored, but still a great toy to play with.
